World Spine Day

World Spine Day – 16th October

It is estimated that 3.7 million Australians are living with back problems at any one time and to coincide with World Spine Day, the team at Walkley Chiropractic have made the month of October our Spinal Education month. Anyone who has suffered any type of back problem will know just how debilitating the pain can be. Even the smallest of movements can send pain shooting around the body.

A healthy spine is the backbone (pardon the pun!) to preventing a considerable number of ailments and when the spine isn’t functioning properly, complaints ranging from headaches and migraine, to shoulder problems, lower back pain, pelvic joint problems and sciatica can ensue.

While not all back pain can be avoided – such as that caused by an accident, there are lifestyle changes that can be adopted that can help prevent injury in the future, while having the added benefit of improving general health, well-being and fitness. Being proactive now can pay dividends in the future.

  1. Regular exercise and keeping excess weight off can go a long way to alleviating pressure on the spine.
  2. Consistent exercise coupled with strengthening the core creates a ‘wearable back brace’ that protects the spine and lower back from injury.
  3. Make ergonomic adjustments at work and practice correct posture techniques when carrying out daily tasks.
  4. Be careful to life heavy objects correctly, bending the knees and letting the legs take the strain rather than the back.
  5. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of Vitamin D to maintain bone strength.
  6. Smokers should quit. This will lead to many health benefits.
  7. Make sure your mattress and pillow are supportive.
  8. Make some lifestyle changes like taking breaks from mobile devices to alleviate strain on the neck and shoulders.
